Charity Spotlight: Chances for Children

Merry March! The weather’s warming up and I can already hear church bells — gotta love a good spring wedding! Before you start putting away your winter coats and cranking out those fabulous pastels, let me introduce you to a wonderful charity that’s helping Haiti’s children blossom. I’m talking about none other than Chances for Children (C4C).

Haiti’s widespread poverty, economic turmoil, and recent devastating natural disasters have created an orphan epidemic in Haiti, but this resolute organization is helping to solve this problem one child, one family, one community at a time.

How does it work?

C4C works with a number of different localized groups within Haiti to proactively address Haiti’s orphan problem by focusing on education, orphan care, and strengthening communities affected.

For instance, the organization is helping create more opportunities for children to attend school through tuition sponsorships and by building community schools. They are also providing food, clothing, medicine and monetary donations to four non-adoption orphanages, which serve over 350 children in total.

C4C also partners with local nonprofits to fund the construction of new schools, provide sponsorships for orphans, create fresh water supplies, provide medical care at local clinics, and implement vocational training programs and agricultural projects.

What are some highlights?

  • Between 2006-2010, C4C constructed and operated a school in Lamerdelle, Haiti, which currently has 400+ students. This school is now run by community leaders.
  • C4C delivered over 46,000 pounds of food, supplies, and medicines to children and families in tent camps after the 2010 Haiti earthquake.
  • C4C has 55 orphaned or abandoned children under their care and have placed an additional 120 children with adoptive families in the U.S.

How can you get involved?

C4C has a sponsorship program, in which interested donors can “adopt” a child and for as little as $30 a month. Each sponsorship can help cover a needy child’s education, nourishment, or medical needs. You can learn more about their sponsorship program here.
